Partnership Seminars 1998
A series of seminars and workshops were conducted in Auckland and Wellington on the practice and theory of partnership as a deliberate strategy for the advancement of social policy. The keynote speakers were Sherri Torjman, Vice-President of the Caledon Institute, Ottawa and Arthur Williamson, Director of the Centre for Voluntary Action Studies, University of Ulster.
The conference looked at the conditions and values which were necessary for genuine partnership, what the benefits would be to all sectors and what the experience was, in New Zealand and in other countries, from which meaningful partnership strategies could be developed as a component of social development and civil society.
The underlying themes in these workshops was a critique of competition as the only way forward, alternatives to the contracting model and the need for civil society to build positive relationships (partnerships) across sectors to sustain a fair and just society.
The papers from these seminars were published by (and are available from) the Institute of Policy Studies at Victoria University in “Partnership – from Practice to Theory”, 1999.
Contracting in the Voluntary Sector, Scoping Study 1998
Conducted by Adrienne von Tunzelmann, McKinley Douglas Ltd, assisted by David Robinson.
An examination of the contracting relationship between government and the voluntary sector from a public policy perspective. The study looked at the implications for government, the voluntary sector and local government. In particular the study looked at how contracting impacts on the wider relationship between government and the voluntary sector and what lessons local government could learn from the experience.
The project was funded by Department of Internal Affairs and six local Councils - Waitakere, Rotorua, Hutt City, Wanganui, Christchurch and Gore.
